What is it? Why do you care? Why do you want this guide? What is DeJap? What is Phantasian Productions? Well, those are a few of the questions that I want to answer. But this is mostly just a section created for my own amusement. So, without further ado, allow me to tell you why I started translating Tales of Phantasia and a bit about the game itself. To be honest, I'm just like any other fan of Tales of Phantasia. I'm US born and raised, and my only schooling in Japanese was in college. I am by no means fluent, nor even exceptionally skilled. But I do know enough and am patient enough to work my through the game. When I run into things that I don't know, I consult several sources to check myself before committing to a particular translation. So I'm fairly confident that what I am providing will be on par with other translation guides and with anything else ToP related that you can currently find. However, do forgive me if I make a mistake. As I said, I'm just another fan, this isn't a job, but I'm still giving it everything I've got. So what I'm saying is, trust me, but keep in mind where I'm going at this project from. Now, as I'm an anime and manga fan, my translation and terminology will tend to gravitate towards those kind of translations. As you will see below, I'm intentionally leaving some Japanese elements in my script. While they all make perfect sense to me, I understand that not everyone will get them. Therefore, I've added a section that explains what I've left in for those who are unfamiliar with anime/manga or with Japanese. If you've got any experience with either, most of this should be fairly basic, but check the section over, you might find something worth knowing. Notice, I need to make the distinction between a translation and localization. What I have done here is to translate. I've given you understanding and I attempt to capture the deeper meaning in things. Truth be told, I would have rather localized this whole script. There is so much meaning in each line, just giving meaning is somewhat cheap to me. So in some places, I have a few expanded comments on certain lines. Other places I take some liberties and probably overstep my bounds as a translator a little bit. But I recognize this difference and I consider it an important one. What you have here is an accurate translation of what is said in the game, and while I would like to give you more, well, that's something that I could only do by adding lines or expanding on statements that, in Japanese, require no such expansion. So why did I start this translation? There were several reasons, some of which are as simple as 'I was bored' and 'There wasn't a complete ToP PSX/PSP translation.' But really, this is just a project that was born from my love of ToP. I wanted to do something that could allow me to enjoy this game more. What better then getting a better understanding of the story by really diving into the Japanese? If nobody else ever uses this translation, it'll still be worth having done for me. This project is really just for fun, but if someone else finds it useful, then it's just that much better. In any case, here's some information on the game itself and on Tales as it relates to ToP. Tales of Phantasia is the first game in the Tales of series, which is a series of games that are on or near the level of series like Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest in Japan. In the US, only the more recent games have gotten much press, the standout example being Tales of Symphonia, which was released for the Nintendo GameCube exclusively in 2004. However, long before Symphonia, Tales had been available to a US audience. I'll give a brief timeline of Tales of Phantasia and other US released Tales games. (Yes, I know there are more games that are Japan only, but you can find a list elsewhere if need be.) 1995 -> Tales of Phantasia SFC Japan Only 1998 -> Tales of Destiny PSX -> Tales of Phantasia PSX Japan Only 2000 -> Tales of Phantasia DeJap Translation Patch Completed 2001 -> Tales of Eternia PSX Renamed Tales of Destiny 2 in the US 2004 -> Tales of Symphonia GC 2006 -> Tales of Phantasia GBA -> Tales of Phantasia PSP Japan Only -> Tales of Legendia PS2 -> Tales of the Abyss PS2 The Tales games use a system known as the LMBS or Linear Motion Battle System. While some games use a 3D version of the same system (like Symphonia or Abyss) most are on a 2D plane. The player controls one of the 4 party members and the other 3 can be controlled, to some degree, by setting up their AI and by manually commanding them. I won't go into any more depth about the battle system, the best way to understand it of course is to actually play the games. Next, here's a small section about previous and current projects related to Tales of Phantasia. DeJap. These were pretty much the first guys on the scene. They released a full patch of the Super Famicom version of ToP some time back. Odds are, if you played a translated ToP ROM, it was the DeJap version. The way they chose to translate is a lot different then my own. While they did well to capture the story itself, honestly, the translation is far from accurate. And, for awhile, this was pretty much the only option that US gamers had to experience Tales of Phantasia. However, while the SFC version is the original, this left US players without the chance to play what is usually considered to be a superior PSX version of the game. I'm going to add this however. I have nothing but respect for anyone who puts their free time, especially as much as these guys did, into a project like this. Translating a game, much less making a full patch for one is not easy. It's thanks to these guys that we ever saw the original Tales game in English. So my thanks go out to these true ToP fans. Phantasian Productions. Phantasian Productions is a group that is attempting to create a patch for the PSX version of ToP. However, unlike DeJap, PP is working to create a full localization of the game, focusing on keeping in continuity with the localization of Tales of Symphonia. As many know, ToP and ToS fall in the same timeline, and the stories, while not directly related, have many important references to each other that help to explain why things are the way they are. In short, it's fair to say that PP's final patch should truly be something for any ToP fan to check out. Their website can be found at I'm not related to their project in any way, I just like what they're doing. Finally, I suppose I should mention ToP GBA. Now, when I first played the GBA version, I had played a little bit of the SFC version and was about halfway through my first playthrough of the PSX version, so I was still young in my Tales of Phantasia obsession. This was also before I had started my effort to translate it. In terms of gameplay, ToP GBA splices the PSX battle system into the plot and presentation of the SFC (more or less). In short, it's kind of ugly and doesn't play very nice. Certainly not up to par with the PSX version in terms of feel. The script is also rather questionable at times. While it's usually decent enough, it does have some rather significant differences. So, if you've never played ToP, it won't kill you to play the GBA version. But once you've played the PSX version, that's it. There's no going back to the GBA. Also, the final evolution of this game has emerged in form of Tales of Phantasia: Full Voice Edition. It's basically a straight port of the PSX game with a fully voiced over main dialogue. I know that the Elven Bow Sidequest was changed to the GBA version, but I believe that besides that, the game is the same. In other words, this script can be used for the PSP version of the game and it'll be almost perfect. There are several additional little parts of the game that I've added to the translation. Most of them are just extras and a few give you titles. You can find them specifically as they are marked with ***PSP Version Only***. And that's all the introduction I have as an introduction to this amazing game. I hope you enjoy this translation guide to Tales of Phantasia. ^_^ _____ ____ /_ _/____ /__ /_______________________________________________________________ / / /__ // __// Japanese To Know and Love 2.00 / /_/ /___//_/ /______________________________________________________________/ So, I've decided that I'm going to use some Japanese in this translation. It's a Japanese game after all, and rather then try and alter my translation to attempt and reflect every little detail, I think it would be more valuable to explain some of the common things that will help you use this translation to its full potential. So, here it goes... _____ ____ /_ _/____ /__ /_______________________________________________________________ / / /__ // __// The Character 'Yo' 2.01 / /_/ /___//_/ /______________________________________________________________/ |_ | _|__ |_/ \ Yo (as we see it) is placed at the end of a sentence. It usually indicates one of several things. Most often it indicates that new information is being provided. Yo can be used to tell the listener/reader that the information being provided is either confirming a previous statement or offering a piece of new information. You'll also often see it used to provide an answer to a question or give directions. At the most basic level, yo can be translated as 'you know'. However, if you speaking in English, it would just be implied in your sentence. For the most part, it's simple to express the meaning of yo when translating a sentence. So be on the lookout for it if you're interested in some of the finer points of the language, but otherwise, don't worry, you won't be missing anything if you don't check each line for yo. Examples Miguel: Is your mother's condition any better? Cless: Her fever has gone down, so I think she should be fine now. At the end of his line, Cless uses yo to provide an answer to his father. General Rule: When you see yo, think of it as 'you know.' _____ ____ /_ _/____ /__ /_______________________________________________________________ / / /__ // __// The Character 'Ne' 2.02 / /_/ /___//_/ /______________________________________________________________/ _| ___ | / \ |/ _\ / |_| | \ So, how is ne used? It's pretty simple. Ne, like yo, is placed at the end of a Japanese sentence. However, in my opinion, it has more importance (especially given the way that I translate). Ne, basically, can be translated as 'Right?' or 'Okay?' or 'You know?'. However, it's not quite that simple. Rising and falling intonation can change the meaning. Most often, it is used to confirm what the speaker is saying. Examples Cless' Mother Maria: But I can't help but worry about you, you know? This line uses ne. She isn't asking Cless, it's just confirming. I don't know if I can really explain it better, so yeah... General Rule: When you see ne, just know that it's asking for a confirmation. _____ ____ /_ _/____ /__ /_______________________________________________________________ / / /__ // __// Japanese Honorifics 2.03 / /_/ /___//_/ /______________________________________________________________/ I've chosen to leave Japanese honorifics in the translation. A lot of Japanese manga and anime will also leave these in when they're subtitled or translated and since I'm used to that, I'm leaving them. I think leaving these will add to the translation since I won't be forced to use awkward and only partially accurate English phrases in their place. So here's an overview of them. -chan Basically a cute version of -san. This is used only with inferiors, with those who are presumed to be younger, or with those with whom the speaker is close to. It is almost never used for males. But if someone is using -chan, you can be pretty sure that they're close friends. Examples Arche uses -chan with all of the females. She has a general disregard for the rules of formality and just has a rather relaxed attitude. Cless uses 'Suzu-chan'. Cless first uses this with Suzu because of her age. Suzu is much younger and -chan is used as a term of endearment. -kun This is the male form of -chan. It's fairly informal. It is used mainly between casual acquaintances or by older (or superior) people towards younger males. Examples Many of the people in Toltus Village use -kun with Cless and Chester. The people of the village know them well enough to be informal with them, but aren't close enough to omit the honorific entirely. Morrison also uses -kun with those two. This is likely a product of both his age and the fact that he knew their parents. -san The simplest way to think of -san is as Mr. or Mrs. It is a term that one uses to refer to a superior or equal when the speaker and subject have a formal relationship or to show respect. -san is the most frequently used honorific and should most often be read simply as a sign of respect, not actually as Mr. or Mrs. Examples Throughout the course of the game, Mint uses -san with Cless and Klarth. Although Mint and Cless have a very close relationship, Mint uses -san with both of them because of their gender difference and the fact that Mint is simply a polite person. Suzu also uses -san with Klarth and Cless. This shows her good manners and a respect for those older than her. Like Mint, Suzu shows respect to all those that she meets. -dono This is a very respectful term, more respectful than -san, but not as much as -sama. The meaning is basically Master, Lord, or Lady. From the examples of it I have seen, using -dono appears to reflect the relative social rank of both the speaker and the subject. This is different than -sama, which can be used to Examples In Tales of Phantasia, Ranzou in the Ninja Village uses -dono. He uses it to show respect to Cless and the others both because of his respect for their deeds and because the nature of the ninja. The lower ranking soldiers also use it to refer to their commanders during the War. -sama This is the most formal of the honorifics. The use of -sama denotes a superior or someone who deserves the highest honor. It is generally translated as Lord or Lady. It is often used by ordinary people referring to someone in a position of power. However, it is not only bound by social rank, it is a more common expression of respect. Examples Edward's wife refers to Lundgrom with -sama. This is a sign of respect and in recognition of his high rank within the kingdom. However, she actually uses -san when speaking TO him. She uses -sama to show her respect for him despite the ordinary relationship they seem to have. None If no honorific is used, this too has a meaning. This is a reflection of a very close relationship. Though it carries slightly less meaning in a game then in real life, the lack of an honorific still carries with it the symbol of a close connection. Examples of the party members do not use honorifics with each other. Almost Most of the party members do not use honorifics with each other. Almost everyone calls Mint by her first name. The same is true with Klarth and Chester. The main party members are all bound by deep friendship and a singular goal, so it makes sense that they would speak to each other without the need for formality. _____ ____ /_ _/____ /__ /_______________________________________________________________ / / /__ // __// Specialized Honorifics 2.04 / /_/ /___//_/ /______________________________________________________________/ -Shishou -> Master Used by Cless when talking to or about Tristan. A great sign of respect, it's most often used by students of a discipline (like swordplay or magic) when speaking to or about their teacher. -Sensei -> Teacher Used by the students of Miguel Alvein among many others. Less formal then Shishou, but still carries a lot of respect. _____ ____ /_ _/____ /__ /_______________________________________________________________ / / /__ // __// Family in Japanese 2.05 / /_/ /___//_/ /______________________________________________________________/ Onii-chan -> Cute version of Older Brother Used by Ami when talking to Chester. Onii-san -> Polite version of Older Brother Used by Chester when referring to himself in a joking manner with Ami. Onee-chan -> Cute version of Older Sister In this context, a girl unrelated to Arche calls her Onee-chan as a sign of endearment and respect for a girl whose age is from around 16 to 25. All three of the above mentioned terms are often used along with the person's name. For example, Artemis refers to Luna as Luna-onee-chan. There's really no particular way to translate it. It's just a sort of indication of an affection by Artemis and of the relationship between them. Imoutou -> Younger Sister Used by Chester and Cless to talk about Ami, Chester's younger sister. Chichi/Haha -> Dad/Mom The most informal way of referring to one's own parents. I think Mint uses Haha for her Mom, but that may be it... Tousan/Kaasan -> Father/Mother More formal and more common way of referring to parents. To make these forms even more formal, an O is added to the front of the word. This is the most frequently used by most characters, including Cless. Chichiue/Hahaue -> Honorable Father/Mother When I translated this, I simply left it as Father/Mother. This form is very formal and used, mostly in traditional families. In ToP, Suzu is the only one who uses this form, but she ALWAYS uses it. It's isn't really cold, but it has a very distant feeling to it... Ojii-chan -> Grandpa (informal) Arche uses this to refer to Maxwell. She's basically calling him Gramps, but cuter. It's amusing considering how powerful Maxwell is. _____ ____ /_ _/____ /__ /_______________________________________________________________ / / /__ // __// I in Japanese 2.07 / /_/ /___//_/ /______________________________________________________________/ Watashi This is the standard Japanese 'I'. It can be used by anyone and is the most polite and common way to refer to oneself. Used by Mint, Klarth, and Cless. Washi This is an old person thing. Basically they can't be troubled to say watashi and so it gets shortened. Not really rude or anything, just one of the quirks of the language. Boku This is a common, male, informal way to refer to oneself. It isn't rude to use Boku, but it isn't generally something that one would use in around a superior. Chester and Cless occasionally use this form. Ore Ore is the most informal male way to say I. It usually not something that would be used in good company except by someone without decent manners. Chester frequently uses this form. Atashi This is an very informal and cute way for a female to refer to herself. It's a rather informal word, though not really offensive in any way. Arche uses this whenever she refers to herself. It's just part of what makes her her. Ware This is only used by males in ToP. I suppose it's rather casual. The two users that come to mind are Meia and Dhaos. When Meia uses it, it's just because he really just speaks his mind. He doesn't feel above or below anyone. It's a slightly arrogant assumption, but not really out of the ordinary. On the other hand, when Dhaos uses it, it certainly has a very arrogant and condescending air about it. Klarth also uses it when making Pacts. And the Ninja, particularly Ranzou seem to use it rather frequently. Waga It's hard to call Waga formal or informal. It's just rather archaic. It's used by Maxwell. I have a hard time figuring out exactly what makes it different then other I words, but it's not really essential. Plural Tachi by itself doesn't mean anything. But combined with any of the above words (watashi-tachi) and it makes it formal. So mine becomes ours, I becomes us, you get the idea. It just adds plural. The exception is Ware becomes Wareware when used in the plural. _____ ____ /_ _/____ /__ /_______________________________________________________________ / / /__ // __// You in Japanese 2.07 / /_/ /___//_/ /______________________________________________________________/ The word 'You' can be translated MANY ways in Japanese. Some are polite and common, but others are informal, rude, and even insulting in many cases. As far as I remember, there are only a few you need to worry about in ToP. I'll give a very basic explanation. Just remember, it is ALWAYS more polite to use someone's name and an honorific then to use a 'You' substitute. Anata -> The most polite form. Can generally be used when talking to someone, assuming that the person is not a superior. Kimi -> Not overly polite, but can be used between people with an informal relationship without being offensive. Anta -> I'm not positive about this one, I think it's about the same level as Kimi though. Omae -> Rude/Insulting depending on use. This is used mainly by Dhaos when speaking to anyone. It is also used by Arche and Chester when speaking to each other. In all of these cases, it indicates that the speaker is superior to the subject. Cless' mother also uses it with him, but they obviously have an extremely close relationship. Onore -> Insulting. No question about it. You don't really say this with kind intentions. I don't believe it has very frequent use in ToP. And I think it's used in the plural. Plural -> Adding Ra to the end of a You word makes most of them plural. Anatara, kimitachi, antara, omaera, onore. Those are the plural version of the you words. It's no nicer to refer to a group with You than it is to refer to one person. The nicer way to say it is to use the leader's name. ex. Cless-tachi. _____ ____ /_ _/____ /__ /_______________________________________________________________ / / /__ // __// ToP Specific Symbols 2.08 / /_/ /___//_/ /______________________________________________________________/ ToP has a few special symbols it uses to end sentences. It's not really that important... There is one other symbol that I want to mention too. I didn't add these in my initial translation, but I'm going to try to go back and put them in if I can. They'll be marked by a <3 for the heart and a ;; for sweat drops. 1) A heart at the end of a sentence. This is used almost entirely by Arche. It indicates she is being flirtatious and playful. Anytime you see this, you should expect that Arche is either causing trouble or planning to. 2) Three sweat drops at the end of a sentence. This just generally indicates that a character is flustered, upset, or embarrassed. Yep... That's about it. It can be used by anyone, but Arche again seems to put the most emotion in her lines. Mint seems easily embarrassed though, and she occasionally gets this symbol as well. Another thing is that Arche often extends her words, which is shown by a ~ in the middle of the sentence. Basically it just indicates that she's stretching out the words. It's like the difference between Hey and Heeeeey! It's just another one of her little quirks. It just adds a bit of inflection to her way of speaking. They way she uses it is again just a playful sort of speech. All the people in the Cave of the Spirits speak like this too. It's kind of a sing-songy way of talking I suppose. _____ ____ /_ _/____ /__ /_______________________________________________________________ / / /__ // __// How Your Favorite Characters Speak 2.09 / /_/ /___//_/ /______________________________________________________________/ I've given each character a rating on the Formality Scale, with 1/10 being least formal, and 10/10 being most formal. Note that while I put Arche at 1 and Suzu at a 10, that was just to set a standard for the party. However, of the characters in your party, I just used those two to set the upper and lower boundaries. Certainly there are greater levels of formality and informality that are possible. Cless Alvein Formality Scale: 6/10 Cless is from a small village where everyone knows everyone else. As such, to those that he knows well, Cless speaks informally. However, he speaks in a very normal way such that anyone who hears him wouldn't think of him any differently. Basically, Cless is your standard Japanese speaker. Chester Barklight Formality Scale: 3/10 Chester was raised in the same place as Cless, so you would think he would speak similarly... But no. Chester speaks a good deal more informally. This, combined with the fact that he pretty much wears his emotions on his sleeves means that Chester could often be considered rude, or at the very least, not someone of great class. He's more of what you would expect from a boy from a small village. Mint Adnade Formality Scale: 8/10 Not as much is known about Mint's upbringing save that she grew up with her mother. We can assume that she was brought up in much the same way as Cless. She is, however, more polite in general then Cless. She rarely, if ever, uses the informal form of speech. Still, her Japanese isn't out of the ordinary. Mint just comes off as being well brought up and polite. Klarth F Lester Formality Scale: 5/10 Klarth speaks more informally then I would have expected him to. He is older then the rest of the party by a fair amount, so that may have something to do with it. He is also from an even smaller village then Toltus. He speaks about the same to everyone, except those in positions of great power. But for the most part, his manner of speaking is only slightly less formal than Cless. Arche Klaine Formality Scale: 1/10 The queen of informal speech herself. It's not that she's really rude... Arche just twists her words around, uses childish and playful ways to refer to herself and generally just talks to everyone like they're her best friend. She has a way of toying around with words and speaking that really sets her apart. In any case, just know that when Arche speaks, it's cute, it's funny, and it's certainly something that would let you think she's something well, special... Fujibayashi Suzu Formality Scale: 10/10 The exact opposite of Arche. Suzu's extraordinarily formal speech patterns are a result of her strict upbringing in the Ninja Village. Her speech is what you would expect of someone in a very traditional family. It's particularly noteworthy that she speaks as she does because of her age. She is younger than any of the others, and you wouldn't expect someone so young to be as well spoken as she is. _____ ____ /_ _/____ /__ /_______________________________________________________________ / / /__ // __// Translation Specifics 2.10 / /_/ /___//_/ /______________________________________________________________/ This is just a section for some random notes on how I translated some things. I don't know how much it'll be updated, but things change. First thing's first. Magic. In Tales of Phantasia, there are many types of what people in the US would call 'magic'. However, in Japanese, these aren't all one and the same. So I'll just explain them all to you briefly here. Houjutsu. Literally, it means Holy Technique. I usually choose to translate it as Healing Art or when used for a person, Healer. However, that doesn't really describe it fully. Even Mint's techniques aren't described properly by 'Healing Arts'. So when the characters are talking about the spell that Morrison uses to teleport them, they call it Houjutsu. Here I used White Magic. White Magic is probably the best way to describe Houjutsu. It's support magic. Majutsu. Literally, this means Black Magic or Sorcery. This is what all of the Elves and Half-Elves in the game are capable of using. I use several different translations. At first I refer to it as Sorcery, however, before long I switch to just calling it Magic. As for people who use Majutsu, I used Magic User and Sorcerer. Both work the same, just depended on the time and place. I may go back and change all this at some point, but for now, that's how it is. Shokanjutsu. Summoning Techniques. It means the same thing in English as it does in Japanese. Klarth is the only one in the game that can use this particular type of magic. I usually don't call it magic, I call it Summoning or call Klarth a Summoner. Simple. For location names, don't take all of them literally. Particularly when it comes to Caves, Caverns, or Grottos. The kanji that describe these places are just as interchangeable in Japanese as the English words are. So I just used names that I thought sounded good for them. I easily could have called them all caves, but how boring would that have been? This is the one area where my translation was somewhat based on my whims, so I hope you'll forgive me for that. _____ ____ /_ _/____ /__ /_______________________________________________________________ / / /__ // __// Tales of Phantasia: The Translation 3.00 / /_/ /___//_/ /______________________________________________________________/ _____ ____ /_ _/____ /__ /_______________________________________________________________ / / /__ // __// Box Art Translation / /_/ /___//_/ /______________________________________________________________/ ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo o Tales of Phantasia for the Super Famicom o ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo Tales of Phantasia Featuring character designs by Fujishima Kousuke, Namco proudly presents it's first fantasy role-playing game for the SFC. Cless: What is it, Dad? Miguel: Has your mother's condition improved at all? Cless: Her fever has gone down, so I think she should be fine now. Miguel: Actually Cless... Miguel: I need to talk to you about that Pendant I gave you. Cless: Pendant? Cless: Ah, you mean the Pendant you gave me for my 15th birthday? Cless: I've been protecting it, just like you told me to then. Cless: What about it? Chester: Well then, I'm going out to hunt. Ami: Be careful, okay Onii-chan? Chester: Yeah, I'll leave the house in your hands. Ami: Onii-chan, I have something I want to give to Cless-san, but... Chester: Yeah, I understand. Ami: See you later! Chester: Hey! Cless! Let's go! Miguel: Was that Chester's voice just now? Cless: Oh! Dad, I'm sorry. Cless: Today I had promised Chester... Miguel: Ah, we can talk about the Pendant over dinner. Cless: All right. Cless: Master Tristan, please feel free to stay awhile. Cless: Sorry, sorry, didn't mean to make you wait. Chester: Don't worry about it. Chester: More importantly, did someone come here? Chester: Everyone was talking about it, shouting over each other and trying to be heard, but... Cless: Yeah, the Master came by. Chester: By Master, you mean... Old man Tristan? Chester: Well, I guess we don't see many amazing people around here... Cless: But I hear that a long time ago, it was Master taught my father in the way of the sword. ???: Cless. Cless: Mom, you're not over your illness yet, you shouldn't be up. Cless' Mother Maria: But I can't help but worry about you, you know? Maria: Just make sure that you're careful, I don't want you to get hurt. Cless: You've got it. Cless: With Chester's bow and my sword we'll be just fine. Chester: Ma'am, you don't need to worry about us. Chester: After all, we're only heading to the mountains for game hunting. Maria: Yes, I know... Maria: Just be sure that you don't overdo it, okay? Maria: Here, take this with you. 'You obtained an Apple Gummy.' Chester: Okay then, I guess we should be heading out. Cless: Yeah, let's do it. Chester: Oh! I almost forgot... Cless: We're going hunting. Cless: We'll bring back something big! Receptionist: Be careful, okay? Swordsman: During a battle, if two people simply keep attacking each other, it is difficult to tell who the superior swordsman is. Swordsman: This is why you must master the fundamentals of defense, that even in the most frantic of battles you can retain your composure. 'The O Button is used to attack while the Square Button blocks.' 'Also, the buttons can be customized using the Battle Controls section under Custom from the Menu.' Swordsman: Finally, what I've been waiting for since I became a student of Alvein-sensei... Swordsman: This is the reason that I've polished my skills under Sensei! Swordsman: Hey, you're the son of Alvein-sensei, Cless, right? Swordsman: This year we can finally have bouts with him like we've been hoping for. Swordsman: By the way, do you know about controlling Battle Formations? ------3 Choices------ 1. Yes, I know all about it. 2. No, please teach me. 3. I know the basics of it. ------Choose 1------ Swordsman: Oh, I see. ------Choose 2------ Swordsman: A Battle Formation is simply one's position when fighting. Swordsman: Cless, as a swordsman, you should be fighting on the frontlines. Swordsman: And while Chester takes up the rear with his bow, you protect him. 'Battle Formation can be changed under the Battle Formation part of the Menu. 'In a normal battle, the vanguard will be on the right side of the screen. However, in a Back Attack, the frontlines will be on the left, so be careful!' ------Choose 3------ Swordsman: Well then, did you also know this? Swordsman: When you are Back Attacked, there is a method of dealing with it... Swordsman: It's useless to fight the enemy in the rear, leaving your allies exposed. Therefore, you allow those allies to escape to the former frontlines. 'In battle, if you press the Formation button (Usually L1) once, it stops the party in that spot. This is best used if you want your allies to stand by for the right moment to strike. Also, if the Formation button is pressed a second time while stopped, the formation is inverted and switches right and left. Therefore, when facing a Back Attack, you should immediately invert the formation.' Tristan: Cless, have you been diligent in your training? Tristan: I'm certain someday you'll surpass even your father with the sword. Cless: Father, I'm going hunting now. Miguel: Take care. Miguel: No need to hurry on your way back. Miguel: Cless, stay out of the way! Apprentice: I'm soooooo hungry~ Apprentice: How long are we going to have to do the same thing? Maid: Ah, Cless, your mother is still resting, so be quiet, okay? Cless: She's fast asleep... 'Will you go to bed?' ------Yes or No------ 'Ami's favorite, Kuma-chan is here.' 'Ami's Secret Box is here.' Ami: Ah, Cless-san, good afternoon. Ami: Um, here... Ami: I made this for you. 'You obtained the Mascot.' Chester: That doll looks just like Cless. Chester: Hahaha, she did a heck of a job, huh? Chester: Is that the thing that you were staying up late every night sewing? Cless: Thank you, I'll treasure it. Chester: So Ami, what about mine? Ami: ...... Chester: Aaah, Onii-san is so sad. Ami: Fine, well then... Ami: Onii-chan, you can have this. 'You obtained a Channeling.' Ami: Please take care. Ami: Be careful, okay? Woman: Ah, if it isn't Cless. Woman: You surprised me. Man: Cless, you should hurry up and find yourself a good girl too! Cless: This bridge is called Maple Bridge. Cless: They say that if two people swear their love on this bridge, their love will last forever. Cless: I don't really know where that legend started in the first place... Youth: Heya Cless, still haven't left for the hunt yet? Youth: Recently there haven't been any incidents, so there's no reason to sound the bell... Youth: It's great that it's peaceful and all, but at this rate I'm going to become unemployed... Youth: If the village is ever in danger, like from fire or things like that, we sound the bell. Traveler: You know, I've been all over this world. Traveler: But being here, so close to such abundant natural marvels, it truly is a wonderful place. Traveler: I hope that I can take my time to rest and give something back to this village. Traveler: What do you say, would you like some instruction in the Way of the Traveler? ------Yes or No------ ------Yes------ Traveler: Well, let's see... The most important thing is to get a full view of the area, you know? Traveler: I assume you already know the importance of checking your position and direction, right? Traveler: Obviously, the best way to check your position is to look at a Map. Traveler: To check what direction you're heading, check your Compass often. 'In the field, you can press L1 or R1 depending on which way you want to rotate the map.' 'In the lower-right of the screen is the map, the present location is indicated by a white mark.' Man: The statue of the goddess behind the alter sure is beautiful, huh? Man: Whoops... I guess I shouldn't be saying that about a goddess... Man: Bad thoughts, bad thoughts... Man: The worship of nature isn't necessarily a bad thing, but anything taken to the extreme can be dangerous... Man: If one takes the doctrine of the church to the extreme, are we supposed to ask forgiveness for every twig we break? Sister: Ah, hello Cless. Sister: What could it be that you need today? Cless: Oh, it's nothing. Sometimes I just wander into the Church without really thinking about it... Sister: You have a good heart guiding you. Sister: May god's divine protection be upon you... Priest: You know, this church was named in honor of Lenios, the founding father of Toltus Village. Priest: We must make this a truly splendid wedding ceremony so that we do not shame the name of the Great Founder. Priest: Mankind and nature must live together in harmony. This is the doctrine of the Great Earth Mother, the goddess Martel. Weapon Dealer: Yo, Cless! Weapon Dealer: Oh yeah, it's good just waving a weapon around. Shopkeeper: Anything I can help you with? Shopkeeper: Sure is nice weather we're having, isn't it? Shopkeeper: But there are some dark clouds gathering in the western skies... Master: What do you think you're doing standing around!? Master: If you need more motivation, I can still yell a little louder! Employee: Y, yes sir! Chester: Ami, this is from the old man's shop, he said to give it to you... Ami: Eh, he didn't give you anything onii-chan? Chester: Nope, he said that this was for you. Chester: Right, Cless? Shopkeeper: Until next time then. Tristan: Cless, hold~on! Cless: Master, are you leaving already? Tristan: Actually, just now, some strange people showed up with an urgent summons. Tristan: I wonder what this is all about. Tristan: My goodness, what an ill-mannered fellow he was... Tristan: In any case, weren't you going somewhere? Cless: We were just about to go boar hunting in the forest to the south. Tristan: Is that so? Remain diligent. 'Pressing the SELECT Button on the 3D Field, will allow you to hear the Cless and the group talk about the story.' Chester: But I mean, you and your father both wear them... Cless: Yeah, but Master Tristan doesn't. Cless: I'm just fine now. Mint: Thank goodness... Maid: Good afternoon. Maid: I was introduced to this house by one of my friends who worked here. Maid: But, Master Morrison is just so... WON-DER-FUL!<3 Maid: Kyaa! I can't believe I said it! Cless: ...... Cless: Whoa! ???: So you finally came around, Cless. Cless: ...... Cless: Chester! Morrison: When I said your friend told me your name, who did you think I was talking about? Morrison: I'm sure you must be surprised to see each other, right? Chester: Morrison-san arrived at the village not long after you left, Cless. Chester: Thanks to him, all the villagers have been given proper burials. Cless: Is that what happened? Cless: But, Morrison-san, why were you there? Morrison: I was pursuing the man in the black armor. Morrison: If I had acted a little more quickly on the information I had obtained, I might have been able to save the village... Morrison: However, because Miguel lived there, I thought it would be okay... Morrison: And Maria was there as well... It's truly unfortunate... Cless: You knew my father and mother!? Morrison: Yes, the two of them and I are old friends. Morrison: And also, the young lady's mother... Meryl. I knew them all very well. Morrison: Mostly likely, better even than you do. Mint: Mother... Cless: ...... Morrison: By the way, Miguel should have been keeping a very precious jewel... Morrison: Cless, do you know anything about it? Cless: If you're talking about that jewel, he had it attached to a necklace and gave it to me as a birthday present but... Morrison: So then, do you have it with you now? Cless: That is... Cless: It was taken from me... Morrison: Taken!? Cless: When I was captured, that man in the black armor took it. Cless: Just what is it that makes the Jewel in that Pendant so important? Morrison: ...... Morrison: What a mess we're in... Morrison: I've been caught hopelessly off-guard in this game. Morrison: This is very bad... Morrison: You'll all have to excuse me, I must hurry to the Underground Crypt. Morrison: I would ask all of you to wait here. Cless: The man in the armor is going to this Underground Crypt, right? Cless: We're going too! Cless: That man is our enemy as well! Morrison: Absolutely not! Chester: What!? Cless: Please! Morrison: With all of you as you currently are, you would only be in my way. Chester: You can't just write us off like that! Cless: Without even giving us a chance... Morrison: Then I ask you this, were you ever able to fight evenly with Miguel? Cless: That's... Morrison: I'm sorry. Morrison: As the children of my dear departed friends, I can't possibly allow you to walk into this dangerous situation... Morrison: How could I face them in the afterlife if I ever did something like that? Morrison: I'm asking you, please allow me this one selfish request. Mint: What do you think that we should do from here? Chester: Well, Morrison-san said that we should wait for him here, but as for me, I absolutely can't leave it at that. Mint: I... Cless: ...... Chester: Cless, what do you think? Chester: Do you plan on just sitting here and waiting? Chester: While the bastard that destroyed the village just... Chester: There's no question! Chester: At that time, didn't we made a promise!!? Chester: We swore that no matter what it took, we would take revenge for those we lost, didn't we!? Chester: But just like Morrison-san said, there may be nothing that we can do. Chester: And if we follow him there to fight, maybe we really will be as helpless as he says... Chester: But even so, this is our only chance, this is our battle!! Chester: Say something! Mint: Please, don't fight! Mint: Please... ???: My, it's awfully noisy here today. Tristan: He~y, Morrison! Tristan: Well now, this is unexpected. Cless: Master Tristan!? Cless: What are you doing here? Tristan: Oh, if it isn't Cless. Tristan: Actually, I come here frequently to have tea. Tristan: Speaking of which, what brings you all here? Cless: The truth is... Cless: ... and that's all that's happened up to this point. Tristan: Hm... Tristan: So that's what happened. Tristan: Miguel could not act because Maria had been taken hostage... Cless: At that time, the ones who called you from the village were most likely that man's subordinates... Tristan: At that time, even if we assume that I hadn't left the village... Tristan: What could such a senile old fool have done... They would have taken me without difficulty. Cless: ...... Tristan: In any case, when I arrived, you were saying something about Morrison telling you that you would only be a hindrance... Mint: Yes... Tristan: Hohoho... Tristan: Just because he can use a few white magic tricks he goes and says something like that. Mint: Is Morrison-san able to use white magic as well? Tristan: As well...? Tristan: ...... Tristan: Oh, now I understand, you're Meryl's daughter. Tristan: You're the spitting image of your mother. Tristan: No doubt you'll grow up to be a real beauty then. Cless: But, why? Cless: Why does everyone seem to know Mint and I and more importantly, why does everyone know our parents? Tristan: You want to know? Cless: Yes, please tell me. Cless: After all, we'll need to know before we pursue our enemies! Chester: Cless! Mint: Cless-san! Cless: Perhaps what Morrison-san said was right, but even still... Cless: I won't hesitate any longer! Cless: Master, please, I'm begging you!! Tristan: Very well. Tristan: However... Tristan: To go there with equipment like that would be foolish indeed. Tristan: Earlier, a Traveling Merchant stopped by the house, you should make preparations before we go. Tristan: When you've completed preparing for the battle, head to the Cave to the South-East. Tristan: I'm going to head there on foot, so I will wait for you there. Cless: Huh? Chester: Cless, what's wrong? Cless: (That Earring...) Cless: (The Earring I got in the Dungeon is gone.) Cless: (Did I drop it somewhere?) Cless: (But where in the world could I have lost it?) Mint: Cless-san, is everything all right? Cless: Y, yeah... Cless: It's nothing, let's go! Peddler: Ah, I'm sorry. Peddler: Is Morrison-san home? Peddler: I had been calling out for some time, but no one had answered, so... Peddler: In any case, can in interest you in buying anything? Peddler: Come again! _____ ____ /_ _/____ /__ /_______________________________________________________________ / / /__ // __// Present: The Underground Crypt 3.04 / /_/ /___//_/ /______________________________________________________________/ *Skit 1* Cless: We can't just leave it all up to Morrison-san! Chester: Ami and the others are counting on us to finish this. Mint: I want to help as well. Let's go after Morrison-san! *Skit 2* *Skit 3* Cless: Okay, let's go towards the Underground Crypt. Mint: Morrison-san should be in that Crypt, right? Chester: That's right. And then we can avenge Ami and everyone! 'Here lies Maria Alvein.' Cless: Mother... Cless: If only I had been stronger... 'Here lies Miguel Alvein.' Cless: Father... 'Here lies Ami Barklight.' Cless: Chester... Cless: May you rest in peace... Treasure Keeper: I won't give you my treasure! Tristan: Oh, you finally came. Tristan: There's no doubt that Morrison has entered the heart of the crypt. Tristan: You'll have to find a way to pass through there. Cless: Yes! Tristan: Very well. Tristan: Well then, allow your master to give you a parting gift. Tristan: I will teach you an Ougi, one of the secret techniques of the Alvein swordsmen... Cless: An Ougi? Tristan: That's right. Tristan: Now, have you finished all of the drills up through the third? Cless: Yes, at this point, I have completed them through the fourth level. Tristan: Oh my... Tristan: In that case, you should be able to pick this up immediately. Tristan: Listen well. Tristan: In order to use an Ougi, you must have mastered the two Techniques that compose it. Tristan: You must be ever vigilant in the training of your spirit and body. Tristan: Then, once you have reached the utmost limits of these two skills, you will be able to draw out the full power of both. Cless: ...... Cless: I understand the principle behind it, but... Tristan: For the time being, just remember that and you'll understand when the time comes. Tristan: This Ougi is made up of the Tokugi Majinken and Hienrenkyaku... Tristan: It is known as Ougi - Majin Hienkyaku. Cless: Are you sure it isn't too early for me to learn this Ougi thing? Tristan: What are you saying? Miguel had already mastered this Ougi at 14. Tristan: And you have his blood flowing in you... Tristan: Of course, there's a saying that goes, "Great talent matures late." Cless: ...... Cless: I understand. Tristan: Do your best. 'Cless has learned Ougi - Majin Hienkyaku.' 'Cless received a Title - Swordsman.' Tristan: "Great talent matures late." Tristan: By the way Cless, did you also know that you can get your allies to use their techniques on command during battle? ------Yes or No------ ------No------- Tristan: As you see the battle developing before you, you might recognize the need to use a specific technique. 'If you find that you often use the same technique with a particular party member, the Shortcut Button can be convenient.' 'With the Tech Menu open during battle, it is possible assign a technique to that button by selecting the technique and pressing L2 or R2.' 'At this time, whatever you have selected as the target will be appointed as the target in the future.' 'When you assign a technique to the shortcut button during battle, if that technique is available to be used, it will be.' Tristan: If a swordsman is strong enough, he can fight to the bitter end by himself. Tristan: However, true strength can be realized only when companions come together and fight as one body. Tristan: That is all, I have nothing left to teach you. 'Entry is forbidden.' 'Will you remove the cover of the coffin?' ------Yes or No------ ------Yes------ Cless: It's locked tight... Cless: It seems like it's sealed by some mysterious power... Cless: This door... Cless: There's no handle or keyhole. Cless: Is there some trick to opening it? Cless: We should be able to move this statue. Cless: Huh? Cless: Just now, I'd swear it moved... Treasure Keeper: Fresh meat!! Cless: What exactly is this thing? Mint: I can feel some kind of strange power emanating from it. Chester: In any case, we should take it with us for now, don't you think? Cless: I'm sure that if we keep going, we'll find some use for it. Cless: It looks like it's something important. 'You obtained the Wraith Ruby.' Cless: What are these figures here for? Chester: Hey Cless, it looks like the inner part of this circle is glowing. Cless: W, what? Cless: My wounds are healing. 'HP and TP were completely restored.' 'There is a lever here, will you flip it?' ------Yes or No------ ------Yes------ Cless: Ahh!! Cless: I dropped the Wraith Ruby... Cless: What does this thing do? Cless: W, what the hell is going on? Cless: I'm floating... Cless: So cool~ Chester: ...... Cless: Ahh!! Cless: There it goes~ Cless: It fell to the lower floor... Treasure Keeper: I won't give you my treasure! Morrison: Your sinister designs end here! Mars Wildoll! Mars: I'm glad you came, after all, this will be a sight to see... Mars: See, look, even your companions have come to see it! Morrison: You all... Morrison: You would go so far to get here... Morrison: Damn it! Mars: Hahaha, you're a fool... Chester: W, what's happening? Mars: The time for the revival of the Ancient King has come! Cless: What did you say!? Mars: That's right, let me tell you a little bit about the present that I've brought back from hell for you. Mars: The Valhalla War... Mars: I'm sure you've heard of it, that legendary war that took place over 100 years ago... Mars: In those days, the two most powerful kingdoms were forced to form an alliance just stand up against the King of another country. Mars: And that King's name was Dhaos!! Mars: However, that man met his end before a group of adventurers. Morrison: I knew. Morrison: Because I carry the blood of one of those brave souls. Cless: !? Morrison: And that doesn't just go for me. Morrison: Cless, you and the young lady there... Morrison: You're both the same as I, descendants of those warriors who fought against all odds and defeated Dhaos. Cless: I am? Mint: And me!? Morrison: It was not by chance that the two of you were the targets of attack. Morrison: From ancient times, your fate had already been tied to Dhaos. Morrison: And because of this man's greed, he was driven to revive Dhaos. Morrison: Isn't that right...! Euclid's rogue Captain of the Guard, Mars Wildoll! Mars: Fuu... The revival of Dhaos has already begun! It's already too late for you to stop it! Cless: ...... Chester: Shut the hell up! Chester: I don't know anything about this Dhaos or this fate business... But I don't give a damn about any of it! Chester: You bastard... Chester: You're the one who killed Ami!! That's more than enough for me! Mars: You fools! You're too late! Mars: Oh... Mars: So, this is the Ancient King Dhaos. Mars: Oh Dhaos, King of ancient days, heed my commands! Mars: My name is Mars... Mars: Mars Wildoll... Dhaos: Fufu, how utterly foolish, to become so entangled in the threads of fate that you believed you were spinning. Mars: What are you saying!? Mars: I broke the seal, you're supposed to obey me!! Dhaos: The extermination of my enemies and retrieval of the keys to my freedom, it was all done by my will alone... Dhaos: Why don't you try to recall? Dhaos: Three months ago, when you first came to this place, what happened? Mars: Y, you can't mean!! Morrison: This is bad, MOVE!! Mars: What!? Dhaos: I have no more need for you. Dhaos: Disappear! Mars: U, uwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh!!!! Dhaos: It is impossible for humans to recognize the burden of destiny that I shoulder, and so without thinking, they continue to chase after their own interests and follow their selfish desires... Dhaos: Now, I must deal with the last survivors of that accursed bunch that sealed me away... Dhaos: And you've even saved me the trouble of finding you!! Dhaos: I can no longer allow you to live. Morrison: This person can not be defeated by the sword alone. Morrison: With my power, I should be able to send you to another place. Morrison: There, you should, no, you must find a technique capable of defeating him. Morrison: This is our last chance!! Cless: What are you talking about!? Morrison: There's no time to explain!! Morrison: And here, this book... Cless: This is!? Morrison: Please, fulfill the will that Miguel and Maria left to you!! Morrison: I'm leaving everything to you... Dhaos: Kukuku, die. Chester: Shit, we won't make it!! Cless: Chester!! Mint: Chester-san!! Morrison: Hey Chester, hang on! Dhaos: That radiant glow was the light of time travel. Dhaos: Answer me... Dhaos: Where did you send them? Morrison: Do you really think I'd tell you!? Dhaos: Stubborn bastard... Dhaos: Well, it really doesn't matter where you sent them... Dhaos: But to be incapable of sending yourself... Your inexperience shows. Morrison: ...... Morrison: Damn!! Dhaos: Kukukuku... Dhaos: This is where your life ends!! ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo o The Aftermath o ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo Cless: Chester!! Cless: ...... Cless: This is... Cless: Mint, hang on! Mint: Cless-san... Mint: ...... Mint: Where are we? Cless: I'm not really sure either... Cless: Just where in the world did we end up? Mint: It's beautiful... Cless: ...... Cless: What happened to Chester? Cless: ...... Cless: And to Morrison-san? Mint: If it's the two of them we're talking about, they are probably, no... They are definitely safe. Cless: ...... Mint: For now, we just need to do whatever we can. Mint: Right, Cless-san... Mint: Please cheer up... Cless: ...... Cless: I'm sorry, this is no time to start feeling down... Mint: You don't have to... Cless: Wait, that's right... Cless: Let's try reading part of this book we received from Morrison-san. Mint: Morrison-san's Book? 'And so, Cless began to read from Morrison's Book.' 'In this book, I have kept a historical record of our battle with a being from another world.' 'Since it was in the distant past, it is uncertain where this enemy appeared from or when the battle began.' 'This invader has called himself Dhaos...' Cless: Dhaos... Mint: Let's try reading a little further on. 'We found that it was impossible to harm Dhaos using any conventional weapons.' 'Furthermore, we learned that he was not bound by the passing of time and had the ability to move freely between the folds of time itself.' 'After being severely wounded in a battle with our ancestors, Dhaos planned to make his escape to the future, to our time.' 'The Morrison household had been, since that time, preparing for the time when Dhaos would reappear so that we could finish the battle started so long ago.' 'And so, that duty had fallen to me.' 'As I sensed Dhaos' arrival approaching, I called upon those who bore the same destiny as I, the Healers Meryl and Maria, and the Swordsman Miguel. Together, we stood within the Underground Crypt, awaiting Dhaos arrival.' 'At that time, we knew that it would be impossible for us to defeat Dhaos.' 'Knowing that, it was our intention to seal Dhaos away.' Morrison: He's coming! Miguel: Don't let your guard down! Meryl: Oh merciful God... Maria: Give us strength... Dhaos: Y, you!? What are you doing here!? Dhaos: Stop!!!!!! Cless: Father, Mother! Mint: Meryl... That's my mother's name. 'With a brilliant flash of light, the four of us realized that we had actually managed to seal away Dhaos.' 'Dhaos power was split in half and sealed in two Pendants. One was taken by Miguel and his wife, the other by Meryl. And I was charged with the duty to stand guard over Dhaos' seal.' 'Cless finally understood the connection between himself, Mint, Dhaos, and their parents.' Mint: This is... Cless: Then, there's no choice as to what we do from here on... Mint: We'll look for a way to defeat Dhaos, correct? Mint: But before that, I think we should search for a place with people. Cless: Yeah, let's do that. Cless: T, this is!! Mint: ...... Mint: That's... Mint: Chester's Bow... Cless: Chester... Mint: Cless-san... Mint: Definitely, I'm sure that he's definitely safe, so... Cless: Shit... _____ ____ /_ _/____ /__ /_______________________________________________________________ / / /__ // __// Past: Belladam Village 3.05 / /_/ /___//_/ /______________________________________________________________/ *Skit 1* Cless: But still, where in the world are we? Somehow it seems familiar. Mint: It feels strange, the air seems different somehow... Cless: The air? Mint: I'm sorry, I can't explain it well. Cless: It's okay. In any case, let's search for a place with some people. They may be able to tell us where we are. *Skit 2* Mint: What shall we do from here? Cless: For now, let's just see if we can find people somewhere. Villager 1: Hey, who's that? Villager 2: They're not from around here. Villager 3: You're right... Villager 1: I wonder where they came from? Cless: Um, excuse me. Cless: Where... Cless: Uh... ???: Visitors? ???: That's rather rare. ???: I'm the elder of this village. Village Elder: If you don't mind my asking, where did you come from? Mint: Eh, um... that is... Cless: My name is Cless, from the Village of Toltus. Cless: This is Mint. Cless: And simply put, we were sent here by a kind of white magic... Cless: When we awoke, we found ourselves in the grasslands nearby. Village Elder: ...... Village Elder: Toltus? Village Elder: ...... Village Elder: I've never heard of it... Village Elder: Have any of you heard of it? Cless: Huh? Village Elder: Hm... Village Elder: You don't appear to be lying... Village Elder: I've also never heard of this technique you called 'white magic'... Village Elder: Are you sure you aren't mistaking it for sorcery? Cless: Sorcery? Cless: No, that can't be. Sorcery is a lost power, it disappeared from this world ages ago... Village Elder: Sorcery is a 'lost power'? Village Elder: It seems that there is much to discuss... Village Elder: But there is no reason to continue standing here, why don't you join me at my home? Village Elder: We can talk about such things more comfortably. Village Elder: If you would please follow me this way. Villager 1: Hey, it seems like something interesting is going on. Villager 2: Let's go along and check it out. Village Elder: Oh yes, I forgot to introduce myself. My name is Lenios. Lenios: A pleasure to meet you. Cless: No, the pleasure is all ours. Cless: (Lenios...) Cless: (I know I've heard that somewhere before...) Lenios: Now, for starters, I find it very strange that you would call Sorcery a 'lost power'. Cless: I was always taught by my mother that this was the case. Cless: In the distant past there certainly was a power known as sorcery, but after a certain point in history, it simply ceased to exist... Mint: Lenios-san, about what you said before, have you truly not heard of white magic? Mint: It is the power to restore. Lenios: Restorative power? Mint: First Aid! Lenios: Oooohhhh... Lenios: What a wonderful feeling... Lenios: But, I do not know of it. Lenios: In return... Lenios: Allow me to show you my power, the power of 'Sorcery'. Lenios: Flames, come forth!!! Cless: A, ;; Cless: Amazing!! Mint: Could this be the power we need to defeat Dhaos!? Lenios: Wha!? Lenios: Did you just say Dhaos!? Cless: Do you know about Dhaos? Lenios: How could I not know of him... Lenios: That man has declared himself the enemy of this entire world! Lenios: Even now, we can do nothing but watch as his power and influence spread across the land. Mint: What!? Mint: But Dhaos has only just awoken from the seal... Lenios: Just awoken from the seal? Lenios: How can that be? Lenios: Even I do not remember how much time has passed since Dhaos first appeared. Cless: How much time has passed!? Cless: Wait, do you think it's possible that somehow we could have come to the world of the Future!? Mint: Huh, the Future? Mint: Ah, no, now I see. This must be the Past, the world before Dhaos was ever sealed away. Lenios: The Future, and the Past, what are you trying to say? Lenios: This is the year 4202 in the Aselian Calendar... Cless & Mint: ...... Cless & Mint: 100 Years Ago!! Mint: It seems so hard to believe. Cless: Yeah, I can't believe it either but... Mint: But, with this, the Elder not knowing about the power of white magic makes sense. Mint: After all, the formal creation of the Order of Healers did not occur until after 4210 in the Aselian Calendar. Cless: I see, so in this era, healing arts haven't even been completely developed yet... Villager: Chief! Villager: How could you do that without any warning!!? Lenios: I don't know what to say. Lenios: So it turns out that the first visitors to the village in ages have come from the future... Lenios: I can hardly bring myself to believe it... Mint: I understand how you feel, but... Mint: I'm convinced that it is the truth. Cless: Even having been through it all myself, I still can't help but doubt it. Cless: But more importantly... Cless: Would you mind telling us more about Dhaos and about Magic? Lenios: Hm. Lenios: It is said that Dhaos cannot be harmed except by Magic. Lenios: Without the ability to use Magic, you will never be able to defeat Dhaos. Lenios: The ability to use Magic is an absolute necessity. Lenios: Regardless... Lenios: The two of you will never be capable of using Magic. Cless: Wh, why not? Lenios: I can plainly see that neither of you carry the blood of the Elves. Lenios: You are both pure-blooded human beings. Lenios: Only those of Elven lineage are capable of using Magic. Mint: Only the Elves, is it? Lenios: That's right... Lenios: Only those of Elven or mixed lineage are capable of spinning together the threads of Mana into what we call Magic. Mint: ...... Mint: This can't be... Cless: Then for us, defeating Dhaos is... Lenios: What, there's no reason to get so down. Lenios: All you need do is seek the aid of powerful individuals who CAN use magic. Cless: Do you know of any such magic users that you could introduce us to? Lenios: Wait just a moment now. Lenios: Do the two of you truly intend to confront and defeat Dhaos? Cless: Of course! Cless: We are determined to do this, we will not hold back! Lenios: Well, yes but... Mint: Please, we're begging you! Cless: We will defeat Dhaos, no matter what the cost! Mint: For sake of Morrison-san and Chester-san... Lenios: Unfortunately, I don't know of any magic users I could introduce you to, but... Cless: I, is that right? Mint: If that's the case, could you tell us where we might be able to meet any Elves? Lenios: Now now, don't jump to conclusions. Lenios: To the north, in the Village of Euclid, there lives a man by the name of Klarth. Lenios: Although he is a human, no one can match the passion with which he has studied magic. Lenios: Day in and day out he has worked tirelessly in research, searching for a way for humans to use magic. Cless: Then I suppose it would be well worth our time to pay this Klarth person a visit. Lenios: Indeed. Lenios: Although, I will warn you, he's known as an eccentric and he tends to be rather blunt... Lenios: Just be prepared to handle the possibility of an icy reception at first... Lenios: But he really is a good person at heart. Lenios: If you tell him your situation, I'm sure that he'll lend you his aid. Cless: I understand, thank you so much! Lenios: Please, thanks aren't necessary. Lenios: I'm just easily wrapped up in all of this youthful spirit, it really can inspire an old magic user. Lenios: It's the least I can do to support those who are working hard for the sake of the entire world. Mint: Village Chief, thank you very much. Lenios: I understand how you must feel, but you need to be careful not to over-do it. Lenios: I think it would be best if you rested here for the night. Lenios: Take it easy for now. Cless: Thank you. Mint: We are in your debt. Lenios: Well, since it's getting late, we should get to sleep. Cless: Yes, let's do that. Mint: Um... Mint: Cless-san... Cless: Eh, what is it? Mint: That is, I mean... Mint: W, will we both be sleeping here tonight? Cless: Hm? Cless: Ah, n, no, I, I'm planning to sleep on the floor... Cless: G, good night... Cless: 100 years in the past, huh? Cless: You think we'll ever be able to get back to our own time? Cless: If we defeat the Dhaos in this era, then... Cless: Will we really be able to change history to save Morrison-san and Chester? Mint: Cless-san, are you still awake? Cless: Y, yeah... Mint: Starting tomorrow... Mint: Let's do our best, okay? Cless: Yeah, that's right... Mint: Cless-san... Mint: Cless-san, good morning. Mint: The Village Chief said we should take this. 'You obtained the World Map.' Lenios' Wife Sophia: Are either of you hungry? ------Yes or No------ ------Yes------ Sophia: Be sure that you eat right. 'You learned the Recipe - Cheeseburger.' Sophia: Please feel free to stay and rest a while. Lenios: Have you met with Klarth yet? Lenios: What? You still haven't? Lenios: Klarth is currently living in the Village of Euclid. *Skit 1* Cless: I wonder what kind of person Klarth is? Mint: I believe Lenios-san said he was a little eccentric... Cless: Eccentric, huh? I can't say hearing that makes me feel any better... Mint: Everything will be fine. If he listens to our story, I'm sure he'll be willing to help us. Cless: That's true, well then, then let's head to Euclid! *Skit 2* Cless: If we defeat Dhaos here... would Father and Mother come back? Mint: I have a feeling that isn't possible... I don't believe we can change things that have already happened. Cless: Is that right? Mint: I'm sorry... Cless: It's okay, in that case... We should at least be able to save Chester and Morrison... Mint: Yes, we will probably, no, we will definitely save them! Cless: Yeah, it was for that reason that Morrison-san sent us to this time! *Skit 3* Chester: Save me! Hurry!! Cless: Uwah! Mint: What's wrong? You looked like you were having a nightmare. Cless: Was it just a dream? Chester was asking me to save him, but there was nothing I could do... Mint: You're probably just exhausted. How about resting some more? Cless: Thanks Mint: It's okay, I'm sure that we'll be able to save them... *Skit 4* Cless: Let's head for Euclid Village to meet this Klarth person. Mint: Do you think that he'll be willing to help us? Cless: Don't worry, I'm sure that he'll be willing to lend us his power. _____ ____ /_ _/____ /__ /_______________________________________________________________ / / /__ // __// Past: Euclid Village 3.06 / /_/ /___//_/ /______________________________________________________________/ 'Beware, the Northern Path is dangerous!' ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo o Nancy & Elwin Sidequest, Part 1 o ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo Cless: Um, what are you doing in a place like this? Mint: Please don't hold back, I'll hear whatever you have to say. Woman: Actually... Woman: There's a person that... that I'm in love with. Mint: I thought so... Mint: And who is this person? Woman: Right now, he's in the Weapon Shop, his name is Elwin. Mint: In the Weapon Shop, I understand. Woman: ...Elwin Woman: Elwin... Cless: Excuse you, you wouldn't happen to be Elwin-san, would you? Elwin: Well yes, I am but... Elwin: Why do you know my name? Cless: Actually, we're here on behalf of a woman that wishes to meet you. Elwin: Well, this is an unexpected honor. Elwin: This person, what's her name and what's she like? Cless: Eh? Elwin: I wonder what she's like... Cless: Excuse me, but would you mind telling us your name? Woman: Ah, I'm sorry. Woman: My name is Nancy, I'm the grocer's daughter. Nancy: Elwin... Cless: Her name is Nancy. She said she was the daughter of this village's grocer. Elwin: I see, the grocer's daughter, Nancy... Elwin: But, I cannot meet her... Mint: Why is that? Elwin: You see, I'm the heir to the Venezzia Import Company... Elwin: Right now, I just happening to be visiting this village on business, however.. Elwin: It won't be long until I have to return to Venezzia. Elwin: And also, the president... my father, he would never allow it. Cless: But couldn't you just try meeting her one time? Elwin: No, if I meet her even once, it will make it all that more difficult when we couldn't meet again... Elwin: Please give the young lady my regards. Elwin: Now then, work work... Nancy: It was no good, right? Nancy: Somehow or another, I knew this would happen. Nancy: I mean, he's the son of the company president, and I'm just the daughter of a grocer... Nancy: No matter how you look at it, we just don't match. Cless: Nancy-san... Nancy: Thank you, but this is enough. Nancy: I'm all right! So don't worry... Nancy: ...... ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo o Klarth F. Lester o ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ???: Is that you, Mirald? ???: If it's tea, you can just go ahead and leave it on the table there. Mint: Excuse me, but might you be Klarth-san? ???: Hm? Klarth: I am, but... Klarth: Do you have some business with me, 'princess'? Mint: We were hoping that we might be able to learn something about the magic research you have done. Klarth: Magic? Klarth: Ahh, I see, then you're interested in joining our classes on Magical Studies? Klarth: If that's all, you should go speak to Mirald inside. Klarth: We require a tuition payment up front of 40,000 Gald. Mint: Eh, a payment? Mint: And that much is... Klarth: Well then, I suppose I have nothing to teach you. Klarth: Come again some time, princess. Mint: ...... Mint: Please stop calling me that. Klarth: I'm so sorry. Klarth: But you never bothered to give me your name to begin with! Klarth: And this is our first meeting, or am I mistaken? Mint: Ah, I, I'm so sorry. Mint: My name is Mint Adnade. Mint: This is Cless-san. Cless: Klarth-san, we must obtain the ability to use magic, no matter what it takes! Cless: In order to defeat Dhaos! Klarth: Did you say to defeat Dhaos? Klarth: Are you serious? Klarth: Hmph, you must believe learning magic is a truly simple thing, but even under the best of circumstances, it requires careful study. One shouldn't speak so boastfully while they remain ignorant, or I would think. Cless: Wha! Mint: That's so cruel... ???: Klarth! ???: Is this how you treat people when I'm not around!? Klarth: Mirald! Mirald: I can't believe you! Mirald: I'll never understand why you have to be so blunt and rude... Is it so hard to be a civil human being? Mirald: Aren't you meeting these people for the first time? Mirald: Did you even ask why they came here? Mirald: Can't you muster even the slightest bit of social grace? Mirald: You really are a fool! A complete idiot!! Mirald: Honestly! Mirald: I apologize for him. Mirald: This guy is like a little kid. Mirald: Oh, I know! Mirald: You should just forget about a guy like this. How about I introduce you to someone more dependable? Mirald: A-GUY-LIKE-THIS... guy like this!? Mirald: ...isn't needed, right? Klarth: Wha! Klarth: Hey!! Klarth: What do you mean a guy like this!? Klarth: What is that supposed to mean!!! Mirald: You don't like that? Mirald: For an unreliable guy like you, 'a guy like this' is just fine! Klarth: What the hell does that mean!? Unreliable... Klarth: Why don't you tell me who it was that followed me all the way to this remote area!? Mirald: Oh my, I just can't seem to remember. Klarth: (What a thing to say...) Mirald: (Just wait you two, he'll break soon!) Mint: Um, we... Cless: No matter what, we need Klarth-san's cooperation. Klarth: Cooperation? Mint: Yes, that's right. Klarth: If that's the case, why didn't you just say so in the first place... Klarth: Now then, what was it that you said you wanted to talk about? Klarth: H~mmm... From the future, huh? Klarth: That's rather hard to believe... Cless: There's no way that we can prove that what we're saying is true... Cless: Because we both had the same doubts about it... Cless: But regardless, it does not change the fact that we need your power in order to defeat Dhaos. Mint: Please, is there any way that we can convince you to lend us your strength? Klarth: I'm sorry to say, but despite what you might have been told, I cannot use sorcery myself. Klarth: As I'm sure you can see, I am neither Elf nor Half Elf, I'm just an ordinary human being. Klarth: Do my ears look pointy to you? Mint: We came here after hearing about you from the Belladam Village Chief. Mint: And...he seemed absolutely certain that if it were Klarth-san, you would certainly have a power we could use. Klarth: ...... Klarth: ...Actually, there is a form of magic that is useable by not just the Elves, but by anyone. Klarth: By borrowing the power of the Spirits, it is possible to produce power that is equal to that of Sorcery. Klarth: This has been the focus of my research, searching out the means necessary for a human to harness the power of the Spirits. Klarth: That power is called Summoning... Mirald: But, you still can't actually use it, right? Klarth: You sure are noisy today. Klarth: Theoretically, there is no reason that this method will not work. Klarth: All that's left is to actually form a Pact with a Spirit and I will be able to use a power equal to sorcery. Klarth: ...However, it's a rather dangerous undertaking to try and form this Pact. Klarth: At any rate, the beings known as Spirits have a tendency to live in places where humans cannot easily tread. Klarth: You said your names were Cless-kun and Mint-san, right? Klarth: Now then... Klarth: If my cooperation is truly what you seek, then... Klarth: You'll need me to be able to use the power of Summoning to achieve your goals, correct? Klarth: If you understand then I assume that's acceptable? Cless: Y, yes! Mint: Thank you so much!! Klarth: If that's the case, we should make our way to Lone Valley without delay. Klarth: The Spirit of Wind, Sylph, resides in that valley. Klarth: Mirald, could you pass me my hat? Klarth: ...... Klarth: I probably won't be able to come back for a while, but... Mirald: If you're worrying about me, I'll be all right. Mirald: I know! When you get back, I'll have a new recipe for pie for you to try. Klarth: In that case, I'd better give it my best, huh? Klarth: Well then, I'll be off. Mirald: Klarth, don't forget to take this with you. Mirald: We have a large collection of books related to magic and Spirits. Mirald: If you'd like, why don't you use some of them as reference material? Mirald: Well, take care out there. Mirald: I'll leave it to you to take care of Klarth. Klarth: Hey hey, what kind of way is that to talk someone older than you? Mirald: My, I don't believe I mentioned anything about your age. Mirald: Oh yes, this is from me. Klarth: ...... Klarth: Well, I guess it doesn't hurt to take it along. 'You obtained a Channeling.' Mirald: If only you weren't so difficult... ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo o Some Informative Reading o ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo 'There seems to be a letter.' 'Klarth, unfortunately, it seems that the knowledge involved in the creation of Pact Rings has been lost.' 'I've searched countless ruins, but in the end I returned with very little information regarding the Pact Rings.' 'However, I've not yet given up hope entirely.' 'There's still the Moria Mineshaft, which is under the Kingdom of Alvanista's control.' 'There may still be some unused Pact Rings there, in the Dwarven Ruins.' 'We should probably go there and investigate, don't you think?' 'There's some money here.' Klarth: Ahh, w, wait... that's... 'It seems that these are Klarth's secret savings.' 'You put it back.' Cless: There doesn't seem to be anything useful for us here. 'Social Structure of Spirits 1' 'When one spends significant time observing the World of the Spirits, it becomes clear that it has its own social hierarchy with both High and Low Order Sprits.' 'However, for the time being we only know of relationship between the Four Great Spirits and their leader, Maxwell.' 'Social Structure of Spirits 2' 'Although unconfirmed, we believe that the Spirits Luna, Shadow, and Aska also follow this hierarchy and are members of the High Order of Spirits.' 'Additionally, we believe that there exists a class of Spirits entirely separate from the first which also has its own structure.' 'There is an old document.' 'Ancient ruins have been discovered in the depths of the Moria Mineshaft.' 'The King of Alvanista immediately made his intentions clear by announcing that an official investigation team had been sent in.' 'The discussion among archeologists seems to have concluded that these ruins are an ancient settlement of the Dwarves.' 'Pact Rings' 'In order to form a Pact with a Spirit, a special type of Ring is required.' 'The creation of these Rings was the product of a collaborative effort by Leonardo of the Elven Tribe and Aegis of the Dwarven Tribe.' 'The Four Great Elements and Spirits' 'In the classification of Spirits, Earth, Water, Fire, and Wind are referred to as the Four Great Elements.' 'Definitions of Spirits and Elements' 'There are a great variety of Spirits in this world.' 'The Four Great Elements (Earth, Water, Fire, Wind) are central to understanding this.' 'Additionally, there are Spirits with the power of the Stars, Moon, Darkness, and Light. There truly are a vast number of Spirits.' 'Spirits and the Physical World' 'Only the Lords of the Spirits are able to physically manifest themselves in our world.' 'Gnome for Earth, Undine for Water, Efreet for Fire, Sylph for Wind.' 'And the Spirit of Molecules and Leader of the Four Great Elements, Maxwell.' 'In addition, we have the Spirit of the Moon Luna, the Spirit of Darkness Shadow, and the Spirit of Light Aska.' 'It is believed that even still there are many other Spirits whose existences have not yet been verified.' Cless: This is a Spell Book! Cless: But I've got no use for it, so I guess I'll just put it back. *Skit 1* Mint: Dhaos can only be defeated by magic right? So will Summoning really be enough? Klarth: Didn't I tell you before, they both use the same power, the power of the Spirits. Cless: Then with it we can defeat Dhaos, right? Klarth: Yeah, that's right. But in order to do that, we need to go to Lone Valley. *Skit 2* Cless: You're always wearing that hat, aren't you? Mint: You're always wearing that bandana too. Klarth: About my hat... Cless: Yeah, this bandana is really precious to me. I got it from my father. Mint: It's the same for me. This hat was a gift from my mother... Klarth: Actually, this hat... Cless: Your hat, it's so cute. Mint: Yes, I think so too. Klarth: I'll just leave you two in your own world... *Skit 3* Cless: You still can't use any summoning power, right? Klarth: Right, but don't worry. Once I make the Pact, I'll be much stronger. Cless: But why are you so weak even without the Spirit? Klarth: Which is WHY we should make the Pact! *Skit 4* Klarth: Let's get going to Lone Valley. Cless: Okay, but... where is it? Klarth: It's North-East of Euclid. There's a man living there with his daughter. Mint: And he'll be able to tell us about Magic? Klarth: Well, it's something like that. _____ ____ /_ _/____ /__ /_______________________________________________________________ / / /__ // __// Past: The City of Hamel 3.07 / /_/ /___//_/ /______________________________________________________________/ Girl: Is God really so great?
